Offering scenic views of Canon City and Arkansas River Valley, Skyline Drive is one of Colorado's hidden gems. The drive was built in 1905 by inmates from the nearby prison who were awarded time off of their sentence for every month they worked on this short scenic roadway that winds and falls like a roller coaster about 240 m (800 ft) above the surrounding terrain. If you're afraid of heights, think twice before testing your driving skills. Using our world travel planner, Cañon City attractions like Skyline Drive can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Do not miss this. It has some of the most breathtaking views and it’s a fun road to drive. We loved it so much we drove through twice. Will be back to drive it again.

  • Always one of my favorite places in Canon. The road is pretty narrow and steep, but once you get to the top the view is amazing (especially at night!). Highly recommend anyone passing through to check it out.
  • Went in with very little expectation but it quickly turned out to be a very thrilling and exciting ride. I highly recommend it if you are visiting Royal George Bridge (~15 min drive). Don't go after sunset though. The road is narrow with no fences on either side and can be dangerous to drive when it's dark, esp. in Winter. The drive ends in Cañon City. If you have some time, check out Cañon City Historic District. It has got some nice places to shop. Autumn's Attic Antique Store and Nirvana Restaurant won't disappoint.
